CAMRA Fenland Pub of The Year 2025

A note from our Landlord….

Hello everybody,

Welcome to the April 1st weather report and how wonderful it is to report that the sun is really shining and the day-time temperatures are getting higher which means it is wonderful to feel the sun on our backs. Prior to being the Landlord of a pub, I was an agronomist in the agricultural world. So, whilst I have just said that it’s lovely that the sun is shining, having mixed in the farming world for 45 years, I have to say we need rain! I also know the gardeners will agree with that.

There were 103 people at the March quizzes which means that, in total, with entry fees and  donations Lincolnshire Air Ambulance has been sent and received £229.

The 1-2-1 question on the first quiz evening of 18th March was chosen on the topic of 60s Pop. The question was “The Spencer Davis Group had 2 bothers in the line-up. Name their 2 Christian names and also their surname.” The Christian names were Stevie and Muff and their surname was Winwood. As a point of interest they also went on to form the group Traffic and also played with Eric Clapton. Unfortunately the contestant was unable to give the right answer so the prize rolled over to the following quiz. The winners of this quiz were “Toxic Squirrel” with 141 points. Well done to them.

The second quiz on 25th March the 1-2-1 question was on the topic of Geography and the question was “Which 2 countries are separated by the Khyber Pass?” The answer is Pakistan and Afghanistan. Once again, unfortunately, the contestant answered incorrectly and so the 1-2-1 prize in April will go up to £140.

The winners of the second quiz were “The Not So Golden Oldies” with 135 points. Well done to them.

Derrick and Friends gave their second-place prize of £20 back to the charity so many thanks to them.

At the first quiz there were 11 teams and in the second there were 13 teams.

April’s quizzes are on 22nd and 29th April, starting at 7.45pm with Quiz Basket Meals served from 5.45pm. Please book your team tables as soon as you can for your chosen evening and, as always, if you find closer to the date that you can no longer attend or your team numbers have changed, please do let us know.

Our new Summer Menu launches today, April 1st and is available on our website.

We’re still deciding on dates for our annual BBQ and also the next Landlord’s Choice Menu and will provide further details when we have them.

As mentioned last month, the Hopical Storm has now finished and its replacement, in a change to our previous announcement, will be Alpacalypse IPA which is 4.3% and comes from Salt Brewery and Molson Coors. . They describe it as a modestly hazy and crisp Session IPA that’s enviably laid-back. It cuts through the chaos to deliver subtle tropical flavours and citrus aromas, with a refreshing finish. The pump is being installed tomorrow and so you should be able to enjoy a pint by Thursday 3rd April.

We think it is a similar taste profile to Neck Oil  and will be priced at £5.20 per pint. The Guinness shortage issues seem to have been resolved and we are now able to get full supplies again. We have, of course, got our usual range of drinks – Timothy Taylor’s Landlord, Batemans 5G, Doom Bar, Guinness, Stella, Birra Moretti and Carling and our cider is Thatcher’s Gold. We also stock a wide range of wines and spirits as well as alcohol free and soft drinks.

Thank you everybody for supporting The Horseshoes,
