Hello Everybody,
The weather report – it’s been very cold and what a surprise it was to see that snow last week. I can’t remember actually ever seeing any snow last winter at all. I hope we don’t get any more!
As always we held 2 pub quizzes in November. The first took place on 19th November and had 9 teams taking part with 41 players. The winners were Pinfold Wizard, well done! The 1-2-1 Question contestant chose 60s pop and the question was “Name the 2 members of the 60s duo The Righteous Brothers” The answer is Bobby Hatfield and Bill Medley which unfortunately was answered incorrectly.
This quiz raised £82 for Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance.
The second quiz on 26th November was attended by 71 quizzers. The winners were Gone to The Dogs (previously known as Derrick & Friends). The 1-2-1 question was on the topic of History. The question was “What was the last battle fought on English soil?” The answer was The Battle of Sedgemoor which the contestant answered correctly and won £100. Well done! This is a controversial answer but Historic England lists this battle as the last pitched battle to be fought on English soil in 1685. The 1-2-1 question will reset at £100 for January as we don’t hold this at the Christmas Family Quiz in December.
As previously mentioned the winners were Gone to The Dogs and they donated their £25 winnings to the Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance fund, thank you very much and well done on winning! This meant in total this evening raised £167 bringing the total raised in November to £249 which has been sent to and received by Lincs and Notts Air Ambulance
The Christmas Family Quiz is due to take place on Sunday 29th December at 7pm. We have around 120 people booked which will mean I shall have to split it into 2 quizzes. The second quiz will take place the following day on Monday 30th December. Both quizzes will start at 7pm and Quiz Basket Meals will be served from 5.30pm and are £6.50. I shall ring round people to try and shuffle some team tables.
On Tuesday 10th December we have a return visit of Kesteven Morris who will be performing their traditional Morris dancing at 7.30pm, weather permitting.
The Carols at The Horseshoes is taking place at 7.30pm on Wednesday 18th December with Kip and Dave of Winter Wilson leading the singing. There will be complimentary mulled wine and mince pies. Our kitchen will close at 6pm to allow preparation for the carol singing. Table reservations this day will be for diners only.
We do have some dates left for Christmas parties, these have been published in a separate post.
On New Year’s Eve we will be serving from a set menu 5-8pm followed by entertainment by the band, Amber from 9pm. Entrance to the evening entertainment is free of charge. Table reservations this day will be for diners only.
The menu for the Landlord’s Choice evening on Saturday 18th January will be ready soon.
The Hawkstone lager (as made and advertised by Jeremy Clarkson) will be on sale from 1st December along with all of our usual beers including everyone’s winter favourite; Rosey Nosey! This is a 4.9% ABV Batemans beer and is £4.90 per pint.
We are pleased to announce that we are once again featured in the Good Beer Guide for 2025. We are also very pleased to have been awarded a finalist position in the NK Community Champion Awards 2024 in the category of Community Business.
Louise and myself congratulate Mrs Janet Johnson on winning the award for Longstanding Contribution at the NK Community Champion Award ceremony on Wednesday 27th November. A well-deserved acknowledgement of over 60 years of dedication to St Denis’ Church, Silk Willoughby.
Kindest regards
Paul Steer, Landlord/ Owner
Louise Nelson, Manager
PS: We’ve had lots of updates from Sinead who is having a wonderful time in Thailand. She’s in good health and thoroughly enjoying herself. Apparently the temperature there is around 30°C
