Great Weather at The Horseshoes

Hello Everybody,

First of all, the weather report. The weather seems to have gone from one extreme to another and from wet and cold we have gone to basking in high temperatures. It is very noticeable that there are more people sitting in the garden enjoying this summer weather at long last.

As you all know, the quiz is now split into two separate nights to make sure it can take place safely and in comfort.

The first Quiz Night on 23rd July had 26 quizzers taking part. This raised £52 for the Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance. The 1-2-1 question on this night was chosen on the topic of 60s pop and the question was “Who in 1965 took the record ‘Yesterday Man’ to number 3 in the UK charts?” The answer was Chris Andrews but unfortunately the contestant gave the wrong answer which meant the prize pot of £120 carried forward to the following Quiz Night on 30th July.

At the second Quiz Night there were 57 quizzers in attendance which raised £114. The 1-2-1 question contestant chose Geography and the question was “Which is the longest river in the world?” The answer being The Nile but the contestant unfortunately answered incorrectly. There is always a debate over which is the biggest river – either the Amazon or the Nile but the Nile is recognized as the longest which was the question posed. The 1-2-1 Question prize pot will now be £140 for August. I have decided that if the 1-2-1 prize is won at the first quiz night of a month the prize pot will stay at that amount on the second night and only reset to £100 the following calendar month. If the prize isn’t won then the prize pot will increase by £20 for the next month.

In total there were 83 quizzers in July which meant £166 was raised plus I made a mistake in last month’s calculation and forgot to add on the donation from the second place team so I have added this to this month’s total instead. This totals £186 which has been sent to and received by the Ambucopter.

The number of quizzers in July was slightly down on bookings due to Covid, holidays and work commitments but thank you to those who got in touch to let us know they wouldn’t be here.

This month the quizzes will be held on Tuesday 20th and 27th August. Quiz meals are £6.50 and served from 5.45pm and the quiz starts at 7.45pm. Please remember to book your team table and do let us know if you find closer to the date that you can’t attend.

On 24th July we were joined by Kesteven Morris Dancers who gave 2 demonstrations which was a very colourful, entertaining and enjoyable event for The Horseshoes. There was a good crowd along to watch the dancing and some even joined in and very good they were too.

We are closing the kitchen on Saturday as we are holding a Birthday BBQ event. I’m still trying to make sure I see everyone we’d like to invite as there are tickets for the food and apologise for anyone I’ve missed. The bar will be open as usual and we’ll be selling the Helihopter pale ale which has been created to raise funds, through sales of barrels, for the Ambucopter. Any money raised from the BBQ will be split equally between Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance, St Denis Church, Silk Willoughby and St Barnabas Hospice.

Whilst we are not serving Christmas Day Lunch this year we are currently creating our Christmas Party menus. These can be booked any Thursday, Friday or Saturday from 29th November to Saturday 21st December.  We recommend reserving your tables early to avoid disappointment but pre-orders can then be made closer to the date.

Our kitchen will close from Monday 23rd December and reopen on Friday 27th December. The bar will remain open over the Christmas period as usual.

On Saturday 23rd November we will be serving a Landlord’s Choice menu which will consist of 3 courses including a game main course of either pheasant, venison or partridge and a bottle of red wine to compliment the dishes. Further details will follow later but the event will be bookings only.

Our current Guest Ale is Batemans 5G and of course we will see the Helihopter soon. Our other beers include Hopical Storm, Timothy Taylor’s Landlord, Doom Bar along with Guinness, Stella, Birra Moretti and Carling and Thatcher’s Gold cider. We also have a wide range of wines and spirits as well as Alcohol Free and soft drinks.

Thank you for reading

Kindest regards,

Paul Steer, Landlord/ Owner
