Hello Everybody,
As usual; the weather report. The weather has been exceptionally dry and, as I said in the last Landlord’s Notes, we do need a good rain. Having said that, isn’t it lovely to be experiencing this really hot weather?
The first quiz of April on Tuesday 22nd had 11 teams made up of 46 players giving a total of £92 to Lincs and Notts Air Ambulance in entrance fees. The 1-2-1 question was “Who wrote Frankenstein?” The answer is of course Mary Shelley and the contestant answered correctly and won £140. Congratulations to them. The 1-2-1 Question prize will reset at £100 in May as it was won at one of the quiz nights in April. The quiz itself was won by The Neighbours with 137 points. Well done to them.
The second quiz night fell on Tuesday 29th and had 12 teams made up of 60 players. This raised £120 in entrance fees plus there was a £2 donation. This quiz had 2 joint first prize winners. These were Derek and Friends and Don’t Change Your Mind (this is their first time winning for some considerable time and they were delighted). Also, team Derek and Friends donated their £25 joint first prize which gave a total of £147. Along with the £92 from the first quiz, the Air Ambulance have received £239 in April.
Further to that, our latest collection box on the bar contained £95.65 and in the letter acknowledging that they also gave us an update on all donations received from The Horseshoes to date which amounts to the grand total of £16,584.43. This is a magnificent amount and, on behalf of the Air Ambulance, I say a very big thank you to everybody who has contributed over the years to that total.
May’s quizzes are on 20th and 27th May, starting at 7.45pm with Quiz Basket Meals served from 5.45pm costing £7. Please book your team tables as soon as you can for your chosen evening and, as always, if you find closer to the date that you can no longer attend or your team numbers have changed, please do let us know.
We will be announcing the dates for our summer BBQ and also the next Landlord’s Choice Menu within the next week.
The Alpacalypse, which replaced the Hopical Storm, is a roaring success and is proving to be a very popular beer in this warmer weather.
We have, of course, got our usual range of drinks – Timothy Taylor’s Landlord, Doom Bar, Guinness, Stella, Birra Moretti and Carling and our cider is Thatcher’s Gold. We also stock a wide range of wines and spirits. The alcohol free beers and ciders are very popular and we have a good range of soft drinks.
The Batemans 5G, which was originally a guest ale, is that popular it will be staying on for the foreseeable future.
Some of you will already know that I have chosen to change the fire in the bar area from solid fuel to LPG. The decision was made because as one gets a little older, it gets more difficult in the depths of winter on dark, cold, wet mornings to be carrying buckets of coal and hot ash etc. I’ve chosen the design of the unit I’ve had put in to mirror, as near as possible, the previous solid fuel fire, which suits the décor of The Horseshoes. From now on I shall I look forward to just pressing a button to get the fire going.
The presentation of the CAMRA Fenland Branch Pub of the Year award will take place on Saturday 10th May at 12pm. Everyone is, of course, welcome.
Thank you everybody for supporting The Horseshoes,
Kindest Regards
Paul Steer – Landlord/ Owner
Louise Nelson – Manager
Emily Hobson – Assistant Manager
