A note from the Landlord…

Hello Everybody,

In the last Landlord’s notes we said we were happy to be basking in the sunshine but in July we seem to have gone into reverse. In fact we understand that July has been the wettest on record. Fortunately we have had an exceptionally busy month, especially on the food side and on Saturday 22nd July we broke our own record and, for the first time ever in the 10 years since we re-opened, we served over 100 meals (101) plus 28 sweets. I, as Landlord/ Owner, say a special thank you to all members of staff for this wonderful achievement and I make a special mention of the kitchen staff on that day; Sinead and Jasmine.

The team we have had in the last few years have worked exceptionally hard and been a credit to The Horseshoes. Unfortunately we are losing 2 very valued members of staff. Victoria has finished her training and qualified as a teacher and has now left to take up a full time teaching job and in September we will be losing Grace who is going to study at Manchester University. Both will be most welcome to return and work shifts in their holidays if they so desire.

Seventy-eight people took part in the July quiz and so £156 has been sent to and received by Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance.

The 1-2-1 contestant chose history as their subject for their question and this was for a prize of £300. The question was “At the Siege of Mafeking who led the British forces?” The answer was Colonel Robert Baden-Powell. Sadly for the contestant he answered incorrectly and so the 1-2-1 Question prize will be £320 in August.

The next quiz will be held on Tuesday 29th August starting at 7.45pm and quiz meals will be served from 5.45pm.

As usual please book your team table in advance and if you find closer to the date that you can no longer attend then please let us know. Thank you.

Whilst the pub has no specific events organized for the immediate future, Silk Willoughby Village Hall Management Committee have approached us with regard to their future plans. They have asked to use the car park on Sunday 10th September for a classic car rally. On October 19th they’d like to hold a Bingo evening in the pub and they will hold the Village Hall Christmas Draw here on Saturday 2nd December.

Over the next few weeks we will have Oakham Ales Inferno which is a 4% ABV light golden beer and Madri (4.6% ABV) as short-term guest ales.

Of course we have all the usual beers; Birra Moretti, Doom Bar, Timothy Taylor Landlord, Batemans XXXB, Guinness, Thatchers etc.

The government has decided to impose a tax on wines between 11 and 14% ABV but we are still waiting for further clarification on this matter and will send out an update as soon as we know more. It is a very confusing picture.

Thank you,

Kindest Regards,

Paul Steer, Landlord/ Owner

Louise Nelson, Manager
