A Note from our Landlord & Air Ambulance Donations

Hello Everybody,

Welcome to The Landlord’s Notes for May 2024 when looking outside it seems the weather really has taken a turn for the better and we’re moving in for some much warmer conditions.

We are now taking bets on how long it will be before we start saying we need rain (we’re never satisfied are we?) but for the time being, as the weather improves, people are starting to sit in the garden area enjoying the sunshine.

There were 90 players in the April quiz raising £180 for Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance. There was a donation of £20 from the 1-2-1 question contestant and the second-placed team donated their whole prize of £20 so, along with a £1 donation from a contestant, £221 in total has been sent to and received by the Air Ambulance.

As mentioned, the 1-2-1 question prize was won in April with the player choosing Classic TV as the topic.  The question was “The Doctor Who series started in 1963 but who played the first ever Doctor Who?” The answer given by the contestant, without a moment’s hesitation, was William Hartnell which is correct and so they won the £160 prize and kindly donated £20 back to the Air Ambulance. First-place quiz winners were Team Belton. Well done!

The next quiz falls on Tuesday  28th May starting at 7.45pm with Quiz Meals served from 5.45pm. As usual if your team has seats booked and you find closer to the day that you can no longer attend or team numbers have changed we really would appreciate you letting us know. Thank you.

It was nice to see Lucy Atkinson, an Air Ambulance Events & Collections Administrator, in attendance at the April quiz and she and her team have also booked in already  for the May quiz.  As a matter of interest Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance, in collaboration with Docks Beers of Grimsby, will be producing  a cask ale. The Helihopter Pale Ale, 3.4% ABV will be sold in pubs, including here at The Horseshoes, and a portion of those sales will be donated to the Ambucopter .

We are grateful to all of our customers who make donations through the Air Ambulance counter-top collections box. The most recent has been taken to their headquarters and they have written to us to let us know that, after counting , the sum was £136.68. They also advised us that in total, over the years between the counter-top boxes, quizzes and other events we have raised £13,305.55 so a big thank you to everyone.

The monthly quiz has become extremely popular for which we are very grateful. As you are probably aware we are having to turn bookings away as we physically don’t have the space to accommodate everybody. We are now considering holding 2 quizzes per month to ensure the quiz remains enjoyable and to avoid disappointing anyone. Further details will follow as we’re still at the stage of deciding exactly what to do.

Our current guest ale is Batemans Brewery 5G which is 4.2% ABV and £4.90 per pint. We also have Hopical Storm, Timothy Taylor’s Landlord, Doom Bar along with Guinness, Stella, Birra Moretti and Carling and Thatcher’s Gold cider. We also stock a good range of alcohol free beers, soft drinks and wines & sprits.

We’ll be starting preparations for the joint Birthday BBQ on August 3rd soon and details will be given as and when.

Kindest regards,

Paul Steer, Landlord/ Owner
